What is "Kutiyattam"

The world’s oldest surviving example of Sanskrit classic play. It has been handed down for over a thousand years within designated families working for Hindu temples in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala.

In Kutiyattam, complex hand gestures called mudra are used to express each and every word, and the eyes and facial expressions are used to communicate detailed emotions.

It was added on the Representative List of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008.
