Story

Tamatsi was washing her hair in the Hanja Tama river when she met Hanja Yamatu. In Okinawa there is a tradition that says if you offer someone a drink from your hands, ‘Yimiji’ you will become man and wife. Yamatu was fascinated by Tamatsui’s beauty. He asked Tamatsui to let him drink water from her hand. Tamatsui refused but she finally gave in to Yamatu’s will and let him drink. As they leave each other they promise to meet again.Yamatu can’t get Tamatsui out of his mind and secretly goes to where Tamatsui is. The two meet again but are found by the gatekeeper and the rumor of the two of them reaches Tamatsui’s father. Tamatsui’s father orders subordinates, Shicya nu ufuyuku and Yamaguchi nu Nishinchi to excuse her. Even with her death imminent Tamatsui is still anxious for Yamatu. In a last testament in the form of a Ryukyu poem ‘Tsurane’, she resigns herself to her fate. Yamatu runs to her when she is about to be killed. Yamatu persuades Shicya nu Ufunushi and Yamaguchi nu Nishinshi to let them go and with words of thanks the two leave.
