Research Performance in December

"Shushin Kaneiri"

The staging of dances that became the basis for group dances like “Shushin Kaneiri,” “Wakashu Tokugushi,” and “Inohana Bushi” during the Ryukyu Kingdom era remains unclear. However, differences existed between the premiere in 1719 and the 1800s, as stage structures changed, and further shifts occurred when it transitioned from a samurai-class art form to a commoner's entertainment in the subsequent Meiji period. This project investigates and restores stage and costume records related to performances from Ryukyu Kingdom-era historical documents and old diagrams, bringing the youthful spirit of Ryukyu performing arts back to life through revival performances. We invite you to attend. This project aims to shed light on the form of young Ryukyuan performing arts by researching records related to stage, costumes, and performance techniques from ancient documents and drawings of the Ryukyu Kingdom era, then restoring and staging them. We hope you will come see it.
